The national program was approved by the government on August 17, 2010. This was the first time that a national key program was specifically set for a basic science.

Le Minh Ha, managing director of VIASM, said that one of the achievements of the program is the successful building of the institute into an excellent mathematics center in the region.

After 10 years of operation, with the scientific reputation of Prof Ngo Bao Chau, the scientific director of VIASAM, and the members of the scientific council, the institute has created an advanced academic environment highly appreciated by the domestic and international mathematics community.

The institute supports advanced research and training of university lecturers, mathematicians, young scientists and postgraduates.

In 2013, after three years of operation, VIASM was recognized by the European Mathematical Society as one of the few Emerging Regional Centres of Excellence in the 2013-2017 period, and in 2018, it once again received recognition for the 2019-2023 period.

To date, only four research institutes in emerging countries have been recognized, including ones in Iran, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia.

VIASM has also created a favorable working environment for Vietnamese and foreign mathematicians to conduct research. It has attracted the world’s leading mathematicians to Vietnam and organized human resource training activities.

With the great efforts of the mathematics community, Vietnam is now in the 35-40th position in the world and tops ASEAN in terms of work published ininternational publications.

According to Ha, this is a great achievement, if noting that other regional countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia have spent big money on the basic sciences and on research and training centers.

The Prime Minister has released Decision No 2200 approving the national key program on mathematics development in the 2021-2030 period, which sets the goal of continuing to develop Vietnam’s mathematics in all aspects, from research to application and training, commensurate with the Vietnamese intellectual potential.

Vietnam aims to have at least five higher education establishments listed among the world’s top 500 in mathematics, and two of them among the top 400.

It also wants to double the number of international publications in SCIE journals in 2021-2030 compared with 2010-2020; and double the number of foreign scientists, including overseas Vietnamese, to come to Vietnam for scientific cooperation.
