The country recorded over 320,000 road traffic accidents from 2009 to May this year, resulting in a staggering 97,700 people being killed and nearly 330,000 injured, reported Tuoi Tre newspaper.

As many as 18,400 traffic incidents were reported last year. Consequently, 8,079 people lost their lives and roughly 14,700 others suffered injuries.

Besides this, the competent forces during the given ten-year period addressed over 53 million violations, submitting over VND23 trillion in fines to the Vietnam State Treasury.

Also, they revoked the driving licenses of 3.4 million violators and impounded over 15 million vehicles.

Up to 80% of traffic accidents were attributable to a lack of driver awareness of traffic laws, with common violations being exceeding the speed limit, overtaking or avoiding other vehicles incorrectly, driving under the influence and poor driving skills.

According to the ministry, traffic police have actively discovered many inadequacies in traffic activities in urban areas and on national highways and expressways, and they have petitioned the competent agencies to work out solutions to reduce the causes of traffic accidents and congestion. SGT
