The Tam Hoa Salt Fields in Hoa Loc Commune, Thanh Hoa Province are benefiting from the hot weather. According to the farmers, they mostly work from April to June when the temperatures are at their highest.

75-year-old Le Van Ngoc said he had been a salt farmer for 40 years. "This job depends mostly on the weather. Even though it's really hot, I still have to work to earn money," he said. "The land must be dealt with first so that saltwater won't leak into the ground."

67-year-old Nguyen Thi Do said, "It's all hard work but most of the farmers are old people."

Despite the hardship, everyone was happy when they look at the white salt. Each person can make 100kg of salt per day and earn VND150,000 (USD6.50) to VND180,000.

Nguyen Van Huan, vice chairman of Hoa Loc Commune People's Committee, said they had about 30 ha of salt fields. The salt fields used to be much larger but many people quit over the years and young people do not want to work in the fields.

"We still maintain the salt fields but we’re also converting some low-quality fields into shrimp farms," Huan said.
