Revelers head home for a holiday in Vietnam. A National Day holiday may be extended from next year

NA deputies will vote on the draft amended labor code, which includes the policy, tomorrow, November 20, the local media reported.

On the sidelines of an NA discussion today, Bui Sy Loi, deputy head of the NA’s Social Affairs Committee, said that the NA Standing Committee had rejected the Government’s proposal to add Vietnam Family Day on June 28 as a national holiday.

According to many NA deputies, the longer National Day holiday will help give working parents more time to relax and prepare for their children’s upcoming school year, which starts on September 5 each year.

If the policy is approved, the additional day off will be either September 1 or 3.

Regulations on the retirement age, overtime cap hike and standard workweek reduction in the draft amended labor code have been amended to secure the interests of both employees and employers.

As for the proposal to reduce the standard workweek from 48 hours to 44 hours, Loi said the NA had assigned the Government to base the decision on the country’s socioeconomic situation. If labor productivity increases, the workweek may be cut to 44 or even 40 hours.

Workers and enterprises are encouraged to negotiate whether the workweek should be cut. SGT
