Ho Chi Minh City to plant half a million trees in 2021
This year, Ho Chi Minh City aims to plant 500,000 trees, contributing to the country’s goal of planting 1 billion trees in the 2021 - 2025 period.
Former Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Nguyen Thien Nhan participates in a tree planting campaign launching ceremony in Thu Duc City on Monday.
As part of the program, a tree planting launching ceremony was held in Thu Duc City early this week, with the attendance of former HCM City Party Secretary Nguyen Thien Nhan and HCM City Chairman Nguyen Thanh Phong.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Phong said that since 2011, environmental protection has become one of the seven breakthrough programs of the city. HCM City has also issued a program to develop public parks and green trees in the city from 2020 to 2030, with the goal of an additional 600 hectares of parks and additional 20 hectares of public green space.
According to Mr. Phong, the total area of parks in the city is only about 500 hectares, equivalent to 0.55m2 per person. The city targets a rate of 7m2 per person.
He said that this year Ho Chi Minh City will strive to complete the goal of planting 500,000 trees. The scheme is to plant 1 billion trees from 2021 to 2025.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development recently submitted to the Prime Minister a project to plant 1 billion trees in the 2021-2025 period.
In 2021 alone, Vietnam will plant about 182 million trees and between 2022 and 2025, the country will plant 204.5 million trees each year.
Specifically, 690 million trees will be planted in both urban and rural areas, and 310 million trees in concentrated forests.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has built a digital tree map in Vietnam to serve the identification of planting sites as well as management and care of trees throughout the country.
The map’s database, including information about tree species, planting processes and characteristics of trees during the growing process, is expected to improve the managing and taking care of trees nationwide.
No measure of money can be exchanged for the mark of time. These trees, with a lifetime of over 1,000 years, are associated with national culture and history.
