Motorcycles and cars are stuck in a traffic jam in HCMC. Elevated roads are expected to help ease traffic congestion in the city

The works include those along Nhieu Loc Canal, Hanoi Highway and Vo Van Kiet Boulevard and from Tan Son Nhat International Airport to Binh Loi to address the worsening traffic congestion in the city.

At a meeting on February 11 on the municipal Department of Transport’s plans for this year, HCMC Vice Chairman Hoan asked the department to coordinate with other relevant agencies to list tasks for this year and submit it to the municipal government before June, according to Sai Gon Giai Phong newspaper.

He also required the Departments of Planning and Investment and Transport and the HCMC Management Board of Investment and Construction of Traffic Projects to mobilize resources, mainly private ones, to execute traffic projects in the city.

The Department of Transport must urgently ask the HCMC government to amend and supplement a decision on the management and use of roadways and sidewalks in the city; roll out plans to restrict trucks travelling on inner-city roads in the daytime and ban coaches on certain streets; and charge automobiles traveling in the city’s downtown area.

In addition, the HCMC Police Department was assigned to cooperate with the Department of Transport to develop a plan to handle traffic violations through the surveillance camera system.

The HCMC government has issued a decision to establish a steering board for the execution of the HCMC-Moc Bai expressway project, connecting the city and Tay Ninh Province. The steering board, led by HCMC Vice Chairman Hoan, will be responsible for ensuring the progress of the project and removing obstacles to its execution.

The 53.5-kilometer expressway project will have four lanes and require an estimated investment of nearly VND10.7 trillion (US$460.7 million). SGT
