All the new cases were locally acquired, and Ho Chi Minh City again took the lead with 158 cases, said the Ministry of Health in its 06.00am COVID-19 update on July 1.

Elsewhere 16 more cases were documented in Tien Giang, eight in Phu Yen, six in Hung Yen and one in Vinh Long.

Most of the new cases were detected in quarantine and lockdown areas, and only one case was of unknown origin.

As of 06.00am on July 1 Vietnam has confirmed 17,052 locally acquired and imported COVID-19 cases.

The latest outbreak, starting in late April 2021, has seen 13,684 people infected with the virus. In 49 out of 63 cities and provinces nationwide

The virus has been kept in check in the north, but it is spreading rapidly in southern and central regions.

To date 6,840 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospital after making a full recovery of the diseases.

The number of COVID-19 related deaths has increased to 80, including 45 during the latest outbreak.

Nearly 3,800,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered nationwide, with only 193,041 people fully receiving two shots,
