To attract highly-qualified engineers, Bosch offers good salary, bonus and allowance as well as insurance for engineers and their two relatives.

Problem-solving and decision-making skills are also required by Mitsubishi Electronics Vietnam in Tan Binh District. The company is seeking engineers for project supervision, workload analytics and installation of elevator supervision.

To seduce employees, the company promised that laborers will be eligible for enjoying the thirteenth and fourteenth salary and two kinds of insurance. Moreover, their income will be raised every two years.

Hitachi Zosen Vietnam Company in District 1 is looking for experienced mechanical engineer with good command of English and Japanese, teamwork and seriousness at work. AutoCAD 3D-CAD or Inventor experience is a plus.

Above all, the company promises to pay competitive salary, rewards and bonuses, additional insurance for relatives and even opportunity to work internationally at the company’s world premises.

Demand fails to meet

Many businesses are facing shortage of technical human resources from engineers to workers. The Center for Youth Employment Services in Ho Chi Minh City (Yes Center) assessed that though tens of thousands of engineers graduate each year, there has been a mismatch between the level of skills and demand from employers “because of a shortage of quality candidates”.

Take an example to understand the matter more. In the 2019 Job Fair organized by the Yes Center and Ly Tu Trong College, 50 participating businesses needed 6,000 employees to work in the manufacturing and producing. The number of jobs was even greater than the number of participants of 5,000 engineering students.

According to VietnamWorks, Vietnam's largest online recruitment unit, 79 percent of businesses are grossly understaffed. Regarding the demand at the end of 2019, VietnamWorks says a shortage of labor significantly in engineers, maintenance reparation, technical devices sales, mechanics, and so forth.

Meanwhile enterprises are lacking workforce, the Center of Forecasting Manpower Needs and Labor Market Information (Falmi) in Ho Chi Minh City’s survey has shown that of over 13,700 unemployed laborers, 87 percent of whom are experienced machine engineers, automation control engineers, applied mechanical technicians.

Falmi Director Tran Le Thanh Truc said that experienced laborers are seeking better salary and benefits. VietnamWorks also announced up to 75 percent of workers in the production field are considering jumping to another job in the end of the year.

The shocking number of 75 percent of manufacturing candidates intending to switch jobs by the end of 2019 in VietnamWorks’ statistical result also alarmed the similar situation. It is more convenient for manufacturing enterprises, but at the same time warns of the permanent risk of labor loss. Measures are needed to apply to prevent this situation.

Opportunities for new graduates

Because of the scarcity of technical and skilled labor, many companies have simultaneously prioritized recruiting newly graduated students.

For instance, Western Refrigeration Company in Go Vap District has a technical intern training program (cold heat, industrial electricity, mechanical welding) for young and potential candidates.

Final-year students or new graduates from the above fields are encouraged to take part in the program.
The company sets out a clear road map of profession promotion and ensures competitive salaries, bonuses and benefits with the aim to develop the company's technical staff.

Meantime, Bach Khoa Refrigeration Electrical and Mechanical Company in District 10 is hunting 40 electrical and refrigeration engineers offering monthly salary of VND13 - 15 million (US$559 - $645) for new graduates.

Nguyen Thi My Duc who heads the company’s Department of Sales and HR said that she would be willing to accept about 60 interns every quarter, paying approximately 60 percent of the newly graduated engineer salary. SGGP
