Goldmark City Building on Ho Tung Mau street

On December 16, a child died after falling from the 12th floor of Goldmark City apartment building in Bac Tu Liem district.

The boy, a sixth grader, was believed to be under pressure from studying.

In late July, a 3-year old boy fell from the sixth floor of The One Residence in Gamuda urban area in Hoang Mai district and died.

Also in July, an accident occurred at Vinaconex1 Building in Cau Giay district. A 5-year-old child fell from the 11th floor and died.

Before the accident, the boy was found lost and he was brought by a security officer to the reception room of the apartment building. After receiving a call from the receptionist, the boy’s father went downstairs to pick the boy up. Later, the father left the boy on the 11th floor, while he went to a meeting on the sixth floor. Just 15 minutes later, the boy was discovered falling through the window.

A 5-year-old child recently fell from the 15th floor of Tecco apartment building in Lao Cai City. The accident occurred at 10 pm. When the child was sleeping, the mother went out for some errands. The boy woke up, went looking for mother and climbed to the bedroom’s window.

At 6.45 am on December 10, a girl fell from the eighth floor of an apartment in Ha  Long City and died.

Most of the victims were small children who were active and liked to climb.

Vu Ngoc Anh from the Ministry of Construction (MOC) said after the accidents, many households decided to put a safety net on balconies. This is not prohibited by the law. However, residents need to consider this before making a decision.

A construction work needs to be designed in a way that not only prevents people from falling down, but also creates favorable conditions for firefighting. Rescue workers need to use the space on the balcony to get into apartments to save people.

If the balcony railing is too high, it will not ensure aesthetics or an easy approach in case of emergency. When households set up nets on balconies to protect children, they will hinder escape when necessary.

Some households use nets made of soft rope. However, it’s necessary to consider how soft the rope should be, to prevent children from stretching it out.

Anh said that parents play a decisive role in protecting children, especially ones with psychological disorders.
