At the Government's online conference with local authorities taking place on the morning of December 28, in his opening speech, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc recalled five years ago, when the Government embarked on the implementation of the five-year social economic development plan, the economy faced many difficulties both at home and abroad.

After 5 years, our country is now better than ever, with high economic growth rate, all people enjoying development achievements, people’s trust in the Party and State is strengthened... Vietnam plays many important roles in the regional and international arena and successfully organized important international events.

According to the Prime Minister, in 2020, under the influence of Covid-19 pandemic, many countries has fallen into recession, but Vietnam is one of a few countries that have maintained positive growth, well controlled the pandemic, and ensured social security.

So far, our country has achieved its dual goal of preventing Covid-19 pandemic and maintaining economic growth. The Party building, anti-corruption work has also been promoted by the Party and State.

The level of success, Prime Minister said, is determined not only by what we have achieved, but also by the obstacles we have overcome. The year 2020 must be considered the most successful year of Vietnam in the past 5 years in terms of spirit and will to rise in all difficulties and challenges.

The people's trust in the Party and the future of the country has been continuously strengthened and improved. The most difficult and thorny times are the opportunity for each person to express the identity of the national spirit, the solidarity.

The Prime Minister said that, with the determination of the entire political system, the consensus of the people and enterprises, the country created more than 1,200 billion USD of GDP in nearly 5 years, on a stable economic basis.

The Prime Minister cited data from international organizations such as: The Economist magazine in August 2020 ranked Vietnam in the top 16 most successful emerging economies in the world; according to the World Bank, with an average economic growth of 6.8% a year in the 2016-2019 period, Vietnam is in the top 10 of the highest growing countries.

He emphasized that the country's economic growth was contributed by the impressive growth of many emerging localities, which are inspiring factors for many other localities to surpass themselves. Growth does not depend much on any particular economic sector.

Regardless of the circumstances, the Government has identified the limitations and difficulties, such as economic growth not commensurate with the potentials, the life of a part of the population is not guaranteed, the income level is still low, the quality of education and health still has many shortcomings in general.

The Prime Minister also mentioned issues close to the people such as traffic accidents, gambling, drugs, environmental pollution...

The Prime Minister said that, in the twenty-first century, the world may not remember the countries leading in income, but will always remember the countries, organizations and individuals pioneering in a number of achievements and contributions for better the life of people.

“Vietnam is not yet in the top group of countries in the world in terms of income, but it is completely able to be a leader in some areas. We need to see opportunities early when others see risks,” the Prime Minister said.

The government is determined to increase GDP growth by 0.5 percentage points in 2021.

The Prime Minister stated that our Party has recognized this opportunity early and is actively proposing major guidlines and policies. Both the political system and the people need exert efforts and determination to turn opportunities into advantages, turn advantages into resources, turn resources into results, and maintaiin sustainable development for the country.

He also said that the targets for 2021 have been balanced and calculated on many factors. The situation has many challenges, but the Government is determined to administer it to increase GDP growth by 0.5 percentage points in 2021.

“Our country faces many opportunities and new challenges, so it is necessary to continue to foster the flame of aspirations, optimism and perseverance with unwavering beliefs for the development path in the next 5 years,” stressed the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister believed that the good qualities of the nation will help make success, as our father stood firmly before all natural disasters, repelled all invasions, helped Vietnam achieve victories in 35 years of Doi Moi.

More than ever, this is a time to consolidate confidence, our economy is moving fast ahead and our nation will certainly move forward faster.

"We are not subjective, we must do better", the Prime Minister asked.
