Trung recently received the award for the best scientific research work at the GLOBECOM Conference 2019 for the second time. He received the same award at the conference in 2016.

He is now teaching at Queen’s Belfast University (the UK).

Over the last 10 years Trung has won many prestigious awards. He was one of eight scientists winning a fellowship from the Royal Society of British Science from 2016 to 2021 (valued at $1 million); Newton Prize 2017 of the British Government (worth £200,000); and Queen’s Best Young Scientist Award 2016 from Queen’s University. He was honored by Queen’s University as a scientist with innovative breakthrough research in 2018.

After 10 years of pursuing scientific research, Prof Duong Quang Trung, 40, is highly respected internationally for his impressive achievements.

He also won Best Paper Award at leading telecom and 5G networks conferences such as IEEE GLOBECOM 2016 and 2019 in the US, and IEEE ICC 2014 in Australia, and IEEE VTC 2013 conference in Germany.


Trung is in the list of 100,000 most cited scientists in the world in 2017 published by PLoS Biology Magazine.

Trung was an excellent telecom major student at HCM City University of Science and Technology. When he was at university, Trung had the habit of reading documents in English. He said thi gave him a firm foundation tostudy overseas and carry out research in the future.

However, he told VietNamNet: “My path was not rosy. I had a lot of failures. ”

He was refused by many schools when applying for overseas postgraduate study. Finally, he obtained an IITA scholarship from the South Korean government.

After obtaining a master’s degree in 2007, he received a full scholarship to study for a doctorate.

“It took me 10 years to obtain the doctorate. However, the slow but firm steps laid good basis for my future reearch career,” he said.

Trung said he cannot remember all of his students because there are many. He just remembered that he had trained 10 students for PhD’s degree and most of them were Vietnamese.

“One of my students, after obtaining doctorate, went to Canada. He also received Best Paper Award at IEEE ICC 2018. His achievement is also a great award for me, the instructor,” Trung said.
