Joining AILab when he was a student, Huynh Hanh Thong is now a software engineer at KMS Technology and a member of the team in charge of developing a website that seeks tutors online, Vnu Tutor.

This is the youngest brainchild of AILab. Vnu Tutor, providing services free of charge, aims to help university students seek extra jobs as tutors, and parents find high-quality tutors among the students of the HCM City National University.

According to Thong, who works as mentor for the Vnu Tutor project, there are many centers providing tutors in HCM City, but they charge fees to students who want to look for jobs, 10-30 percent of the first-month wages. With Vnu Tutor, students and parents can meet more easily, free of charge.

Performing pioneering AI research in Vietnamese language for the Vietnamese people is the mission that AILab under the HCM City National University is pursuing.

“In the first phase of operation, the website won’t charge a fee. In the future, the website plans to charge parents, not students who look for jobs,” Thong explained.

Vnu Tutor is just one of many projects that research teams at AI Lab is implementing. AILab is also working on voice processing. There are converting text documents into voice (text to speech) and converting voice to text (speech to text).

Over the last 10 years, the research team has come up with different versions, with many different applications.

Do Tri Nhan, a sophomore information technology major, who joined the research team on text-to-speech system, said there are still many problems in dealing with voice and text documents in Vietnamese language.

“The task of our team is making the voice more familiar to Vietnamese, more realistic, so that it can be applied more in reality,” Nhan said.

Nguyen Thu Hong An, also an IT major student, said the deep knowledge in AI attracts him to AI Lab. AI is a compulsory subject for her at school. At the lab, he can also receive useful knowledge in AI and other fields.

Database in Vietnamese

AILab is carrying out VNVoice, a project aims at building up a Vietnamese data set, helping people access voice recognition technology. This is a project to join hands with the community in the 4.0 industry revolution

VNVoice is also the project that Dr Vu Hai Quan, deputy director of the HCM City National University and head of AILab, has been pursuing throughout his scientific research life.

Quan said the research in AI in general, and in speech processing in particular, needs a lot of data. Therefore, AI Lab is creating 1,000 hours of speaking Vietnamese to serve research on speech recognition and synthesis.
