The Japanese professor, who comes from the University of Tsukuba, will also hold a workshop on geometric origami at the center on December 21.

Professor Mitani Jun specializes in computer-aided origami design, or simply, designing origami with computer software. The spherical and 3D origami is a new concept of origami, involving three dimensionality and even curved surfaces.

Differing from the traditional origami process, this innovative origami is made possible by using software to compute the completed origami form and the folding process.

It requires a unique method called curved folding, which may be difficult to apply at first, but once successful, it produces a magical three-dimensional shape that makes viewers wonder how it can be made with one sheet of paper.

Mitani completed a doctoral program in engineering at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Engineering in 2004. He became a lecturer at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Tsukuba in 2006, where he has been serving as a professor until now.

He has combined his childhood hobbies of making paper crafts with computing, which has led to his present profession. He also serves as a councilor of the Japan Origami Academic Society.

Professor Mitani has written two books, including “3D Origami Art” and “Curved Origami Design” published by CRC Press.

The event enables visitors to explore a new folding method of origami, the well-known paper folding art of Japanese culture.

The workshop is in Japanese with Vietnamese interpretation, while the exhibition offers free entrance.
