The Beautiful and Real: An Oral History of Cai Luong program includes a book exhibition, live cai luong performances, seminar and workshop on cai luong, and the screening of “Song Lang”, a film about cai luong directed by Leon Le.

The book exhibition will be held on Nguyen Van Binh Book Street in District 1 from November 23 to December 8. The event will introduce “Beautiful and Real: An Oral History of Cai Luong”, a book featuring the stories of 24 southern cai luong artists. The book was written in English by Hugo Frey and Suzanne Joinson from University of Chichester, with the Vietnamese version translated by Nguyen Thi Minh Ngoc.

Visitors can also watch a short film about the effort to support the training of cai luong for Vietnam’s youth. Other events will take place on the book street from November 23 to 24.

The Beautiful and Real: An Oral History of Cai Luong program aims to contribute to the preservation of cai luong in particular and local culture in general, and promote the values and opportunities that cultural heritage can bring.

Veteran artist Minh Vuong of HCM City was awarded the title People’s Artist by the Prime Minister in recognition of his great contribution to cai luong (reformed opera), a 100-year-old traditional theatre genre of the southern region.
